ACA offeres Special Effects Makeup Class on October 5

The Adrian Center for the Arts (ACA) welcomes ACA member and new instructor Brian Smith who will teach a class in special effects makeup just in time for Halloween.

Smith is self-taught, and has done effects make up work for his own independent films. He was lucky enough to make gelatin effects for Bob Keen of Star Wars fame, in an early, low budget picture. His work has become a loved hobby that he will share that with students.

The class is geared to those 13 and older. Students will learn the basics of special effects in a 4-hour session when Smith shares the secrets of creating gelatin prosthetics, skin lesions and fake blood. Ample time will allow students to become familiar in the execution of these easy techniques. The class will include a complete gelatin kit which also features a how-to booklet revealing all the recipes and secrets, so that the journey into special effects can continue at home with easily available materials.

The class will be held from noon – 4 p.m., October 5 in the Youth Studio in ACA Gallery Bldg. 46. To sign up for “Monsters, Blood, Guts and Gore,” visit
